On a typical humid morning, the cobblestone streets of St. Augustine’s historic district are lined with traditional paintings of flora and fauna, watercolor beach scenes, birds and blue skies.

But head to the corner of Cordova Street and you'll find bold abstractions spread over countertops, mosaics crafted entirely from map pins, mixed media etchings, canvases splashed with salvaged materials, handcrafted jewelry, all hanging alongside seascapes of oil on canvas.

This is the Art Collective St. Augustine, a former-upscale-pet-supply-turned-gallery that has captured the hearts of locals and tourists alike.

Owner Mare Martelli says she has shown her work throughout town over the seven years she's lived here while closely involved with the St. Augustine Art Association. However, she had a vision for doing more for the artistic community.

"I figured I could put together a place to showcase a wide variety of mediums and styles," Martelli says. "I just wanted to create a special place."

In less than two years, she's cultivated a unique business model that benefits the community along with individual artists, installing exhibits around town (most notably at the Limelight Theater) and biannually commissioning artists to contribute small canvases to the Collective, with all proceeds going to local charities.

Whether you're on the First Friday Art Walk or a lunch break, between classes or on your way to the next trolley stop, take time to step into 51 Cordova Street.

The Art Collective, which offers visitors complimentary cabernet and cookies, is a welcome breath of fresh, colorful, creative air.
